The Open Source Alternative - Linux DVR Software

DVD Movie Copying
How DVD movie copying software is used for burning software and ripping

DVR stands for digital video recording, it is a technology that is helping to shape the way people are watching television all over the World. When compared to the many devices that came before, it makes every other device like tape recorders, VCRs, or time lapse recorders seem almost primitive in their make up. The principal difference is that DVR technology is entirely digital. This means that it is capable of providing many features that were previously unavailable - features that allow high quality data storage and retrieval without the need for an external storage method. These storage methods in the past were CD's or to go back even further in history, video cassette recorders.

Instead DVR technology converts data into MPEG format and then stores it on a hard disk. The DVR itself contains an internal hard disc, as well as allowing transfer of data saved to a computer hard disc, either internal or external.

The development of DVR technology has sparked of what has become a mini revolution. A revolution that even transpires television viewing. DVR technology also has allowed the development of applications that are used in security and surveillance operations.

Because of its success and the tremendous potential that DVR Technology appears to offer, companies that have developed operating systems have been competing to provide the ideal platform for the DVR technology.

One example is that of Linspire, Inc, Linspire are developers of the commercial desktop Linux operating system, as well as Freespire, the community desktop Linux operating system.

The company has recently announced the launch of their Sage TV Media Center Version 6. This media is available for consumers who operate the Linspire and Freespire desktop Linux operating system. The project is a result of increased collaboration between Linspire and the Sage TV Company. Sage TV are well known company and recognized as being pioneers in personal video recording and home media center technologies. Technologies that combine television, music and related media into an all inclusive, user friendly home media experience.

The Sage TV Media Center software will allow its users to views and record TV programs on their computer desktop as well as in their living room.

In addition the collaboration between the two companies will allow their customers to taka advantage of an optional extra. This extra, known as the Sage TV Place shifter, will enable their customers to connect their home TV to any PC-based media library.

Linux's collaboration with Sage TV to produce the Media Center is a sign that the leading software platform companies have realized the massive potential that there is in DVR technology. None of them want to be left behind and miss the boat.
